Portraits in Paris

My gaze, to exist within yours: “I offer you the best of myself to guide you in the pursuit of the sublime.”

A multitude of seekers, searching for the inexpressible beauty held within the generous act of offering oneself to the lens: a new series of anonymous portraits by Gianluca Tamorri.
Stripped of all scenery, of lavish Renaissance costumes, and the swirling emotion of colour, in a psychological quest akin to the somber, intimate portraits of Antonello da Messina, the subject is frozen forever in the generous gesture of offering their face, their soul. It is a relaxed Sunday, spent wandering through an art gallery-bookshop... This is the single thread that unites these people: they are simply passing through.
They stop at the Photo Studio corner within this immense design space, a magnet for lovers of the arts and the avant-garde.
Through the chance of the moment, an impromptu sliver of time, Gianluca Tamorri invites visitors to participate in his series of respectful, monochrome portraits.
But what is he searching for? Certainly not the flattering effigies of celebrities at exclusive galas.
He wishes to see us “as we are, without fake smiles, without finery, without deception, without staged or painted artifice”. In these portraits, one clearly perceives the transition from the subject's initial apprehension to a state of total trust.
It is a dialogue, an exchange, while the photographer practices an approach to Portraiture that is never reduced simply to the mastery of light on skin for a stylized beauty, the polished patina of Harcourt or Mapplethorpe. He achieves this, of course, through years of technical mastery and a profound sensitivity to human nature. But how does one express human warmth within the coldness of direct, artificial monochrome light?
It is the human presence that emerges, capturing a powerful angle of an individual’s history. It is a testimony to our transient lives, halting the inexorable march of time for a single moment of grace, held forever. Post-COVID-19, maskless, in full acceptance of the risk of revealing oneself to a stranger’s gaze. The subject intimately offers their face, bathed in a harsh light, yet one studied in the finest detail. Who, then, is the benevolent witness, free of judgment? It is the photographer.
And you, the Viewer of this testimony, of these instant messages from strangers, look for the common thread beyond the location: the “punto fijo,” the secret of Gianluca Tamorri. By looking deeper into this series, we see the generosity of these strangers and a silent exchange on the “Why.” Ultimately, we find the sublime of the human condition: the communication of souls and minds through the eyes.
Indeed, the thirst for aesthetic novelty is the only point of grace shared between the subject, the photographer, and you, the spectator. Beyond the gaze, observed and observing, you have contributed to this deeply human testimony: a concert of fleeting thoughts for silent voices
